The Gothic quarter
This medieval quarter, with the most outstanding urban monuments, also called “Cathedral” (Barry de La seu), it has a more funny name “rovell de l OU” (egg yolk).
The quarter, located between the Cathedral and the town Hall, and partially surrounded by the bastions of the Roman walls, is probably the most attractive part of the city. In the beginning of XX century it was called “Gothic” . although the Gothic buildings have survived in other parts of the city. However, this is where the architectural ensemble of buildings stood in perfect harmony and deserved the most attention in this quarter was conducted a number of serious restoration work.
The quarter begins with the Plaza Nova, the oldest area of Barcelona, with which once it was possible to enter the territory of the Roman settlement “Barsine” and which in the XIII century was the most prosperous market town where they sold slaves as well. Here still two Roman towers that were part of the old city wall, which was the only protection of the city until the XIII century. To this period belongs the Bishop’s Palace (Palau Episcopal), which is located to the right of the Roman towers, thereby creating a striking contrast with the modern building of the College of Architects, the exterior frieze designed by Picasso.
Baroque facade of the XVIII century facing the Plaza Nova, should not mislead: actually, this is a very ancient Continue reading
Survey of underground structures
When designing urban and industrial development, streets and roads availability of comprehensive information on existing and envisaged future of underground engineering networks and facilities is of paramount importance.
Problems of operation and development of cities, related to deficit areas, increasing traffic flow, the preservation of monuments of history and architecture, by increasing the area of green plantings require more intensive use of underground space. Therefore, the nomenclature of underground structures is expanding, increasing their power, complicated technological and technical characteristics.
When designing new cities this task is somewhat simplified and consists of gathering detailed data on all of the designed underground structures as for top-priority works, and In the future, these data must include not only the underground structures of the urban economy, but also through the underground networks that serve to ensure the work of industrial enterprises for any purpose, and transit national, provincial, regional and district networks (water pipelines, gas pipelines, conduits, ducts, cable lines of high voltage, communication cable lines, etc.). All these data must belong to a single integrated plan of underground engineering networks and constructions. These plans show the horizontal and vertical position of all gaskets, chambers, wells.
However, Continue reading
